Our Safe Place LGBTQ Youth Drop In

One of San Diego’s most vulnerable populations, Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Questioning (LGBTQ) youth, often suffer because of non-supportive or even hostile environments in their homes, schools, and communities. Located at SBCS Trolley Trestle Youth Hub, Our Safe Place (OSP) provides a wide variety of services for youth and their families, including support for alcohol and drug abuse, coming out, depression, family relationships, gender identity, sexual health, safe dating and transitioning.

Our Safe Place is a collaborative program with San Diego Youth Services and the YMCA of San Diego County. Each partner provides a drop-in center and San Diego Youth Services also provides a mental health clinic. The program is funded by the County of San Diego Health and Human Services Agency.

The Southbay Youth Center

In order to develop into successful adults, our LGBTQ youth need a safe, welcoming, and affirming space where they can be themselves and access the resources they need. This year, our Hillcrest Youth Center (HYC) celebrates 20 years as the first LGBTQ drop-in and recreational center in San Diego County, and our South Bay Youth Center (SBYC) celebrated its first year as a hub for youth and families in Chula Vista. Both Youth Centers are dedicated to the needs of LGBTQ and nonbinary youth, as well as youth living with HIV.

GLSEN San Diego County

GLSEN San Diego County is a chapter of GLSEN, a national organization fighting for every student’s right to a safe, supportive education.
GLSEN San Diego County is a grassroots initiative, working locally in our community to ensure safe schools for all students, regardless of sexual orientation and gender identity. There are 43 Chapters around the country doing this important work. Join us today!
Our chapter supports students and educators locally, organizes around LGBTQ-affirming public policy, plans teacher trainings, and hosts events for students, educators, parents, and allies. Chapters like ours play an important role in bringing GLSEN’s programs and visions to right where we live, work, and learn. While some chapters have full-time or part-time staff, most are entirely volunteer-based. We're always looking for new volunteers to help us ensure safe schools for all students.
Explore our website to find out more about our work here in San Diego County and to learn about how you can get involved in local and national events.
